Workshop on Progress Review of China-UK-Tanzania Malaria Control Pilot Project Held in Shanghai

In order to timely promote the implementation of the China-UK-Tanzania Malaria Control Pilot Project (Contract No. GHSP-CS-OP4-D02), National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, China CDC (NIPD) organized a progress review workshop in Shanghai from 1st February to 4th February 2018. More than 20 people from NIPD, the IFAKARA Health Institute in Tanzania (IHI), as well as CDCs from Shandong, Henan, Guangxi, Chongqing and other provinces and cities attended the workshop. Dr. Han Tieru, former WHO senior official and director of the Chinese Society of Global Health, Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, and Chen Xun, project officer of the Programme Management Office (PMO) of the China-UK Global Health Support Programme (GHSP) were invited to the workshop. GHSP external evaluation expert Dr. James Keeley also attended the meeting.

Prof. Zhou Xiaonong, Director of the pilot project and NIPD fully affirmed the progress and effectiveness of the pilot project, and thanked all the partners for their unremitting efforts. Meanwhile, he hoped to promote the sustainable development of the project through the discussion. Dr. Prosper Chaki, project manager of the pilot in Tanzania, Prof. Wang Duoquan, project manager on the Chinese side, and other experts reported on the major progress of the project and the expected outputs. The experts had an in-depth discussion and put forward relevant opinions and suggestions, which were of great significance to the successful conclusion and sustainable development of the project.

 

The meeting also had an in-depth discussion on the GHSP Phase II concept note. Dr. Han Tieru gave guidance on how various pilot project parties could continue to participate in and contribute to the GHSP Phase II. After the meeting, NIPD compiled all the opinions and submitted the written document to PMO and DFID for reference.

 

In order to ensure the successful completion of the project before 30th June 2018 and the quality and quantity of the deliverables, GHSP project officer Chen Xun introduced contract acceptance arrangement and Ms. Tang Yingjie, project financial officer of NIPD, introduced the final financial reimbursement arrangement. All the parties from China and Tanzania discussed the completion issues, clarified the responsibilities and made arrangements over the future work, so as to ensure that the timely completion of the project, the proper use of funds and the quality and quantity of the deliverables.

 

The meeting summarized the work of the pilot project timely, and clarified the future plans, which will lay a good foundation for the timely promotion and application of pilot project results as well as the sustainable development of the project.

 

 

Background

Overseas Pilot Project on Malaria Control in Tanzania supported by GHSP with the duration from May 2015 to June 2018 is conducted by the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, China CDC. The expected goals are as follows:

Apply Chinese experiences on malaria control and elimination, and integrate with the T3-strategy of World Health Organization (WHO), to carry out pilot projects. By strengthening malaria control system construction and capacity-building to improve the efficiency of malaria control activities and reduce the malaria disease burden in the pilot communities. Meanwhile, explore the best models on how to translate Chinese experiences into Tanzania’s malaria control practices and expand the models to other African countries.

Explore experience, lessons and effective models from health development cooperation between China and other developing countries by the pilot projects, to provide policy recommendations for China’s bilateral and multilateral health cooperation.
