China's Strategies Responding to Artemisinin Resistance in the Lancang-Mekong Sub-region
Abstract
Artemisinin and its derivatives is the world's leading medicine for malaria treatment and has saved millions of lives since it was used. After the discovery of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to artemisinin in Cambodia in 2008, the continued spread of artemisinin-resistant strains throughout the Lancang-Mekong Sub-region caused concerns in the international community. Curbing artemisinin resistance is important for consolidating malaria control achievement and maintaining global health security. In the health cooperation with the other five countries in the Lancang-Mekong Sub-region, China should give full play to its expertise, encourage multi-collaboration, focus on capacity building, and strive to take response to artemisinin-resistance as a role model of South-South health cooperation and sustainable development.
